Of Light And Dark

My Experience in the Occult & Why I Came back to My Catholic Faith

"What Child is This" & the Light of Christmas

December 24, 2021

What Child is this, who laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King Whom shepherds guard and angels sing Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the babe, the son of Mary.

About the Music

“What Child is This” may be counted among our oldest Christmas melodies. Set to the music of a medieval tune called “Greensleeves,” it is a song that has stood the test of time and this is no surprise. The melody is beautiful and so are the lyrics.

Like many of our traditional Christmas customs, "What Child is This" dates back to a time when the darkness of winter couldn’t be banished by the flip of a switch and people labored to keep the home fires burning.

Which brings to mind another kind of darkness and another kind of light.

About the Light

On this day, two years ago, I had just returned from Israel. The memory of the spiritual light I saw in the churches of Jerusalem and the spiritual darkness that surrounded them was fresh in my mind.

This Christmas the memory returns to me.  And with it comes a conviction that Christmas isn't really about gifts or gratitude or even goodwill - though all of those things are part of it.

Instead, to me, Christnas is about light - the light that came into the world two thousand years ago and is with us still.
The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it – John 5:1 NRSV-CE

Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas <3

About My YouTube Channel (Video)

December 22, 2021

In 2022 my YouTube channel will focus on spiritual warfare, the influence of the New Age and occult (in everyday life and in the media) AND our beautiful Catholic faith.  The overarching theme of the channel is a Catholic approach to spiritual warfare and I think that's the direction I'll be taking here in this blog as well.

Because I opened so many doors to the demonic over the course of my life (during the seven dedicated years I spent in the new age and occult and prior through a lifetime of dabbling) I deal with a fair amount of spiritual warfare.

As a topic, spiritual warfare interests me and I want to learn more about it and share what I learn in my media.  But it is also part of my everyday experience and I think that it probably always will be.  More importantly - this does NOT make me in anyway unique.

Everyone is subject to the ordinary action of the devil via temptation and I believe that more and more people are affected by the extraordinary action of Satan as well.  So I think it's important to talk about this in my media and ebooks.

The video above (or at this link if you're reading via digest) is the trailer to my channel.  It's very short but it does cover the basics of my channel.  The cover image is a little spammy looking but I wanted to get people's attention.  And I think that cover does that - for better or worse!

Please subscribe to my YouTube channel at youtube.com/c/BarbaraGraver - I'd interested - AND keep checking back here for more posts on spiritual warfare, occult influence and our beautiful Catholic faith!

A Catholic Nurse's Take on Holistic Wellness

December 16, 2021

As a young single mom I was no stranger to stress.  My fast paced job as a registered nurse involved overtime and on-call.  And my three small boys were very active.

My health, for the most part was good, but one winter I came down with a case of bronchitis I just couldn't kick.  So I turned to mainstream medicine.

Taking the Medical Route

I took round after round of antibiotics, self-administered albuterol nebulizer treatments and began the bronchodilator theophylline which was potentially so toxic it had to be monitored through bloodwork.  This would have been fine - if anything I was being told to do had helped.  But it really didn't.  In fact, every time I began to feel a little better, I'd relapse.

Finally, my doctor suggested prednisone.  I was familiar with prednisone and its side effects - and already experiencing significant side effects from the other medication I was taking.  So I decided to look into complimentary and alternative modalities.

Complimentary, Alternative  and Holistic Wellness

The first thing I learned was the difference between complimentary and alternative wellness.  Alternative health care is exactly what it says - an alternative to conventional (or biologically based) medicine.  Complimentary (or holistic) measures, on the other hand, work alongside - but do not replace - mainstream medical management.

Once I understood the terminology, I was pleased to learn that many complimentary approaches were well within the scope of standard nursing practice.  These included simple comfort measures, environmental changes, and support strategies - like optimal nutrition, hydration, exercise and rest.

I also learned a bit about the history of nursing and was surprised to find a rich tradition of complimentary nursing practices going all the way back to Florence Nightingale, my childhood idol.  These practices included some things I'd learned about in school and a few that I had not (such as simple herbal remedies and aromatherapy).

The school I'd attended (Misericordia University in Dallas, PA) had stressed independent nursing practice and a holistic (body, mind and spirit) approach to wellness.  So I was very comfortable with the complimentary / holistic measures I was learning about.

A Holistic / Balanced Approach

I  did a lot of thinking that winter about what taking a holistic approach to wellness really meant.  While I didn't feel that my faith in my doctor was in any way misplaced, I could clearly see that I had been emphasizing body based solutions over the spiritual.

I was very out of balance.  I had relied upon traditional medicine completely, ignored the emotional cost of overwork, and drastically underemphasized my Catholic faith.  So, with the full cooperation of my doctor, I began my own simple holistic treatment regime.

This regime included daily prayer, attending Mass several times a week, taking garlic honey in the morning, elderberry tea in the evening, rosemary inhalations (which I no longer recommend),* increased fruits and vegetables, a moratorium on overtime, and spending more time out of doors.  And, while it didn't happen overnight, I did get better!

Holistic Wellness Meets East and West

That first experience with holistic healing occurred over twenty years ago but, in many ways, it changed my approach to nursing - and life.

I am now a holistic nurse, a student in the Science and Art of Herbalism program, and a member of the American Holistic Nurses Association.  As such, I am a big proponent of holistic wellness - but I do have a couple of reservations.

The first reservation is that, as a registered nurse, I believe that moving forward with any treatment approach without involving your physician is always potentially dangerous.

While it is true, that in ancient times people relied completely on herbal and natural remedies, western medicine is not our enemy.  Instead it is a vital part of any sound approach to healing and wellness.  It is only when we rely upon certain aspects of western medicine exclusively (like pharmaceuticals) that we are likely to become unbalanced - from a holistic perspective.

My second reservation concerns the many new age and eastern practices (such as chakra work or Reiki) that are now associated with holistic health and wellness.

My problem isn't that people who identify as Hindu (or new age for that matter) may be using these modalities - it's that the general population is being told these practices are spiritually neutral or non-religious.  This is absolutely not the case.

As a matter of fact, for many people practices like yoga, Reiki and eastern meditation can serve a gateway to deeper involvement in the new age and occult.

My Media

I will be sharing some Catholic friendly holistic wellness resources both here in this blog and on YouTube.  This will include some specific wellness strategies - as well an emphasis on our Catholic faith.

Our God is a god of healing.  This doesn't mean that we should deliberately test Him by refusing to go to the doctor or omitting commonsense wellness strategies.  But it should cause us to have faith in His ability to guide us on the path to restoration and health.

*Please note:  Herbal inhalations done with hot water can burn delicate lung tissue.  Essential oil diffusers are now readily available and much safer.  Please do NOT directly inhale any kind of steam or vapor from any source - including a diffuser.

Holistic Wellness & New Age Deception (Video)

December 3, 2021

Is holistic wellness compatible with the Catholic faith?  I believe it can be, with a few caveats.  In this video I chat about holistic wellness, new age deception and a few of the many resources of our Catholic faith.

If you like this kind of content, please consider subscribing to my YouTube channel at youtube.com/BarbaraGraver where I discuss Catholic friendly wellness, new age deception and spiritual warfare - or sign up to my email list!

If you'd like to read my take on the difference between holistic and alternative health care, please check out this link:  A Catholic Nurse's Take on Holistic Wellness.

PLEASE NOTE:  I sometimes get a little rattled when I do videos (especially when my pup is barking at me through the door) and make mistakes.  In this one I said hypotension instead of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) TWICE.  I also said "most" toxic medicine is based on herbs which is wrong, wrong, wrong.  I meant to say "some" - which I suspect most people already know.

Hopefully I will get better with this in time!

New Age To Catholic Info on YouTube

November 29, 2021

I posted this video a few months ago and thought it might be worth sharing here too.  I'm didn't actually start a new channel but did go in a different direction.  New content has focused on spiritual warfare, new age deception and Catholic friendly wellness and other alternatives to new age and occult modalities. But I'll be focusing on what I'm learning about demonology and some of my thoughts about the occult, too, going forward.

I will get some of the other videos up here too!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

November 25, 2021

Not everyone in the U.S. is on board with Thanksgiving and I understand that.  Every year in fact, I think about whether our family should celebrate it or not.  This year however we did.  Not because we're not aware of the issues surround this day but because we really are grateful for all that we have.

New Age / Occult Temptation (Video)

November 20, 2021

Not all that long ago, I was sure that the new age and occult was something I’d left behind completely.  Then came a night when I couldn't sleep.

And for some reason, I decided to turn to a guided “brain wave meditation” for comfort. This was a meditation I was very familiar with. One that had lulled me to sleep many times when I was deeply involved in the new age.

The meditation itself was expertly produced and there was a seductiveness to it that I welcomed. I listened to it three times over before I fell asleep.

The next day, however, I didn't really feel rested - instead I felt down and kind of off. So I decided to listen to some other meditations on the same YouTube channel. All of which were produced by the same “brain wave” company). Just to see if there was something I had missed.

As I listened to these meditations, I noticed that many of the vibrations and background tracks were unusually deep in pitch. And, underneath the pleasant voice over, I sensed an underlying darkness. It felt malevolent.

I unsubscribed from the "brain wave meditation" YouTube channel and began to think about what had happened. The more I thought about it the more certain I felt. The meditations were dark and I had embraced it.

The fact that this had happened to someone who was well acquainted with the spiritual dangers of the new age – was sobering. And it gave me a new appreciation of the threat this stuff can pose.

And there is a lot of this kind of content.  On YouTube and elsewhere.

New Age and the Occult in the Mainstream

Sometimes it seems like the new age and occult is everywhere.  Here are a few examples.

  • A professional organization to which I belong, the American Holistic Nurses Association, promotes numerous new age modalities.
  • The first tier of meditations on my FitBit app are by Deepak Chopra.
  • Popular health and wellness resources focus on new age, Eastern and even occult practices.
  • YouTube searches for wellness or relaxation or related topics almost always return a host of new age results.

So it’s no surprise really that people consume new age and occult content. Unfortunately, for some this content will serve as a gateway to even deeper involvement in the occult.

I know this because I was of those people. And – as it turns out – still have the protentional to repeat the same mistake.

Even though I know that the new age and occult doesn’t actually offer anything. Even though I know that its guidance is circular, its peace is an illusion, and its tenants are false.

The Good News

The good news is that there are Catholic and Catholic friendly alternatives to everything the new age  offers.  And - unlike new age and occult practices -  these alternatives actually work.

I've realized that this is important and that I want to keep posting on this topic here and on YouTube.

I'll be posting all of my old (and new) videos here (and on my BarbaraGraver.com site) but you can also check them out on my YouTube channel too at YouTube.com/c/BarbaraGraver).

And if you can please subscribe!

I've been having some studio issues this week but I hope to get my first video up by the weekend!

Genre Writing and Being Catholic

November 15, 2021

All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king. - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of The Ring

I'm participating in the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing) for the first time this year.  For those who aren’t familiar, the challenge of NaNoWriMo is to write a complete, 50,000 word novel during the month of November. And I've reached the halfway point and while I am struggling I'm also learning a lot about writing.

I didn't blog much during November or work on my etsy shop and, while I did manage to get to Mass and say the Rosary most mornings, my focus on my home definitely slipped.  So, I'm happy to go back to writing at my previous pace.

But the main issue that came up for me during NaNo is the conflict I'm feeling about writing any kind of popular fiction.  Before I came back to the Church I had no issues.  Now, I sometimes feel that I'm writing things that conflict with my Catholic faith.

This is not to say that Catholic authors can't write genre fiction because, of course, they can.  J.R.R. Tolkien managed it.  And lots of people in the Catholic Writers Guild seem to be managing it too.

So maybe I'm over complicating it.

I may just need to read more Catholic fiction.  And I'm going to be addressing it in prayer, as well.

St. Hildegard of Bingen: 12th Century Healer & Visionary

November 10, 2021

Vision is a German film that chronicles the life of the 12th century Christian mystic St. Hildegard von Bingen. The film begins with her early childhood and covers all of the known major events of her adult life. It is subtitled but moves at a readable pace.

St. Hildegard von Bingen was not only a visionary. She was also a gifted healer, a painter, religious leader, poet, and composer. One of the things I especially liked about Vision was the beautiful sound track based on St. Hildegard's own compositions. I was less impressed with emphasis on the saints personal relationships.

Not that I doubt that she had them or suffered at times with them, as do we all.  But, to me, she is so much more than that.

St. Hildegard's Visions

According to multiple sources, including Barbara Newman, author of Voice of the Living Light: St. Hildegard of Bingen and Her World, St. Hildegard experienced (and recorded) a series mystical visions that she had been having since childhood.  These writings describe a brilliant light pouring down from heaven, which the saint referred to as "the living light."

Because angels appeared to St. Hildegard in her visions, she gave a lot of thought to the relationship between angels and man. The saint foresaw an apocalyptic future giving way to a new heaven and a new earth as described in the book of Revelation.

Direct translations of St. Hildegard's visions may be found in Hildegard von Bingen's Mystical Visions which I have not read. But hope to read soon.

St. Hildegard attributed most of her accomplishments (including her incredibly beautiful musical compositions) to her visionary experience. But she remained modest throughout her life, giving all glory and honor to God as shown in the following letter to another religious leader:

A wind blew from a high mountain and, as it passed over ornamented castles and towers, it put into motion a small feather which had no ability of its own to fly but received its movement entirely from the wind. Surely the almighty God arranged this to show what the Divine could achieve through a creature that had no hope of achieving anything by itself.  ~ St. Hildegard's letter to Abbot Philip

St. Hildegard and Holistic Wellness

St. Hildegard believed in a strong connection between body and soul and regarded physical disturbance as a sign of a deeper imbalance.  Her pharmacopoeia, The Physica (Hildegard von Bingen's Physica: The Complete English Translation of Her Classic Work on Health and Healing) discusses the specific medicinal qualities of plants, elements, living creatures and metals.

The Physica does mention the use of crystals which (as an ex new ager) I do not recommend. It is worth noting, however, that St. Hildegard seemed to be attempting to utilize the mineral (rather than the magical) qualities of the stones. In many instances she placed the recommended stones directly against the skin or asked the patient to hold them in their mouth.

To me, fact that the Physica must be read critically (like all historical medical treatises) doesn't detract from its value. As one of the three female doctors of the Catholic Church, St. Hildegard's medical and visionary writings may be taken seriously.

St. Hildegard's Legacy

Assuming a leadership position throughout her life, St. Hildegard served as magistra of the sisterhood at Disibodenberg and went on to found her own convent at Rupertberg in the face of great opposition. She was the author of the Physica three books of visions, numerous musical works and what many consider to be the first morality play.

Canonized after her death, St. Hildegard's progressive and holistic approach to the treatment of illness was far ahead of its time and an inspiration to anyone with an interest in holistic wellness.

Her many visions are thought provoking and well recorded.

Her delicate and haunting liturgical melodies speak directly to the heart. To me, their survival over these last 800 years is a remarkable testimony. I listen to them often.  To me, they are more effective then any new age or Eastern meditation.

One of the things I love about St. Hildegard is that she reminds us our Catholic faith IS all encompassing.  Thanks to St. Hildegard and other saints we are the recipients of both a rich mystical tradition and an approach to wellness that is well worth exploring.

Homily on the Importance of Scripture

October 26, 2021

This video includes Fr. Joseph Elston's October 10th homily on the importance of reading the Bible.

The Gospel reading begins at the 15 minute mark and the homily follows.  This homily made a big impression on me because I had been struggling to make reading the Bible part of my daily routine.

This was just the encouragement I needed!

My Bible in a Year Study Space

October 20, 2021

Where I'm at with the Bible in a Year Study

I spent all of November focusing on the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenge.  Which did not leave a lot of time for my Bible in a Year study.  I also had to cut back on a few other things - including this blog.

Right now I'm trying to re-establish a reasonable balance between my faith, home, writing, shop and media.  I'm not quite there yet but I already feel so much better.  Particularly because of the faith piece.  But getting my home back in some semblance of order is helping too.

It's nice picking up where I left off.  Almost like reconnecting with an old friend!

Yesterday I watched my first Trent Horn video in over a month.  Today I started stripping the last bit of trim in the front hall - and wrote this post.  Tomorrow I am going to revisit my neglected apologetics books.  Next week I'm going start back up with my Bible in a Year Bible study.  On the weekend I hope to possibly make a YouTube video, second blog post and / or hop back on Etsy and work on my shop.

There is a lot more to say about all of that.  But today I want to focus on Bible study.  It is hard to add a new activity to my daily routine but I really do feel called to do it.  So, to me, it was no coincidence that our parish priest, Fr. Elston, began to talk about lectio divina and the importance of Scripture in his homilies just as I was starting the study.

Father has even started putting a reflection verse and guide to lectio divina in the weekly bulletin.  I hope to talk more about lectio divina in another post.  In this one, I want to share the Bible in a Year Study space I set up before things got so crazy.

Creating a Spiritual Space in My Home

During lockdown I made my living room into a mini chapel.

I set up an altar and started collecting holy statues.  Then wall mounted a flatscreen TV (that had gone unused in my bedroom) so I could watch Sunday Mass when it was livestreamed from our local parish.

I am back at Mass now but I still like having the space to say my Rosary and watch some of my favorite Catholic priests on YouTube.

Recently I decided it would ALSO be nice to set up a Bible study space in the same room.  This space is just a corner of a room and you do NOT to have a dedicated chapel-room to do it.  If space is an issue for you (like it was for me, prior to the last move) you can always set up a space in your room or a shared area.  If you use a shared area it may help to create private time by getting up early.

My Bible In a Year Study Corner

You can see my Bible in a Year study corner in the picture above.

The rocking chair once belonged to my maternal grandmother as did the china cabinet. I know a china cabinet doesn't really belong in a living room but I had to move it out of the kitchen anyway to make room for the coal stove and I like the idea of putting my prayer books, Bibles, prayer cards and rosaries behind glass.  They are holy items and I think it's nice to put them somewhere special.

In the pictures below you can see my Bible in a Year study tools both in the cabinet and out.

You may notice that my Bible in a Year notebook is spiral bound.  It did not come this way!  But because I wanted it to lay flat I took it to Staples and had it rebound.  The spiral binding and plastic cover (clear in front, navy blue in the back) costs under $5 and to me it's worth it if I'm going to be using a book a lot. ( I'm actually going to be doing the same thing with Fr. Ripperger's prayer book later this week.)

The Our Lovely World book you see in the bottom picture is my favorite book from childhood and one of two I've kept.  It is about a crow looking for the creator of the beautiful world that surrounds him.  It touched me as a child and I am even more impressed by its message now.

I hope to review the study materials in a future post but will say here that I am very happy with my Great Adventure Bible and Bible in a Year notebook.

Catholic Friendly Paranormal Fiction & NaNoWriMo

October 16, 2021

I've been saying the 54 day Rosary Novena for 14 days now.  And I feel that my increased devotion to the Blessed Mother is helping me gain some much needed clarity.

I will talking about this more in next week's video, but I wanted to hit a few key points here in this post.

The Clarity I Gained

Ever since I can remember, I've been interested in the paranormal.

I like popular movies like Deliver Us From Evil, the Exorcist and the Conjuring series.  I've had first hand experience with what some people call "the other side."  I was once a very serious paranormal investigator,  I have read a range of books on the demonic and a fair amount of paranormal fiction.

I also write in that genre.

My writing now is very different from the writing I did when I was involved in the New Age and occult but most of it revolves around the very same themes.

While the themes I write about haven't really changed, however, my perspective is very different.  And the more popular books and media I consume, the more disagreement I see between my beliefs and those expressed in the mainstream.

For example.  I don't think God and Satan are evenly matched.  I don't think that magic is a thing or that there is a positive "energy" we can draw upon to empower ourselves.  I don't believe in the law of attraction or other occult concepts.  And I don't believe that we can overcome evil without God's help.

This makes writing paranormal fiction tricky.  But I still want to do it.  Partially because I love it.  And partially I keep tripping over the subtle and not so subtle messaging in popular paranormal media.  This has happened so many times over the last couple of weeks, in fact, that it got me thinking about my own (stalled) paranormal novel.

I'll talk more about that in next week's video.  What I want to share here is that I feel like my awareness of this messaging was heightened by my increased devotion to Mary.  And that this awareness makes me want to write a paranormal novel which is, if not Catholic specific, at least Catholic friendly.

I will still be finishing the testimony ebook and hope to spend the month of December doing just that.  But for the remainder of this month and next I'm going to take my paranormal novel off the back burner and write my first draft.

And I'm happy to say that I came across something this week that may help me do it.

Comitting to NaNoWriMo

November is National Novel Writing Month (or NaNoWriMo).

The basic idea of NaNoWriMo is that novelists commit to writing 50,000 words in one month.  Every November thousands of novelists start with a brand new idea and end up with a first draft.  Others take an existing idea, or a beginning they've been struggling with, and write 50,000 words to finish it.

I have always wanted to participate in NaNoWriMo.  And I always miss it.  Except that, this year, I didn't.  Probably because I had been laying the groundwork without even knowing it.

In early October I started thinking a lot about popular media and how nice it would be to finish the paranormal novel I started earlier this year.  Why not, I asked myself, put something out there that doesn't directly contradict spiritual truth as I know it?

I couldn't think of any reason why I shouldn't give it another shot.  Fiction is, after all, what I do best and these are the themes I like to write about.

So I went back to the novel I'd set aside. I even sent a couple of excerpts to my son to get his take.  Which is a step I have never made before.

The working title of the new  novel is The Demon Tracker.  As the title suggests it is about demons but is also about the Catholic faith.  I have been struggling with the concept for a while - which is the real reason, I think, that I jumped ship.

But the really cool thing is this.  The day after I went back to the manuscript I got an email about NaNoWriMo.

It seemed like what I needed, exactly.

Where Mary Fits In

I'm not saying, or even implying, that the Blessed Mother is calling me to write paranormal fiction because I don't think that's the case.  But I do think that my increased devotion to Mary has made me more sensitive to the problems that people of faith have with many of shows and films and books that focus on the paranormal.

Maybe people of faith shouldn't watch or read (or write) that stuff.  But the fact is, many do.

I believe that much of what is available in that genre distorts the truth.  It is just entertainment, of course.  But it is entertainment with a message that essentially opposes many of the tenets of the Catholic faith.

I don't know if the Blessed Mother approves of what I'm writing or not.  I do think, however, that she would want me to do what I do in a way that doesn't directly contradict what her Son has taught.  And that the increased sensitivity I'm gaining, through my devotion to her, might help me do that.

I talk a lot about the faith both here - and on YouTube - and I intend to continue.  But I am not an apologist or a Bible scholar or a religious.  I am a popular writer.

I think that I'm finally beginning to understand that I can be who I am and not compromise my beliefs.  So, in November, I'm going to give NaNoWriMo a shot.

Please check back throughout November for updates and excerpts!

Our Lady of the Rosary: My Focus

October 6, 2021

Pray the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary to obtain peace in the world . . . for she alone can save it. - Our Lady of Fatima, July 13, 1917

Because October is Rosary month and tomorrow, October 7th, is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, I have been focusing on Our Lady of the Rosary in a few different ways.  These include learning about the Rosary, saying a 54 Day Rosary Novena and designing a new Rosary pamphlet for my Etsy shop.

A Bit About Our Lady of the Rosary

I am just barely scratching the surface of all there is to learn about Marian apparitions and the Rosary but here are a couple of  things I've learned so far.

In 1208, St. Dominic was sent to preach against the Albigensian heresy but had little success until the Blessed Mother appeared to him and gifted him with the Rosary.  While there is no hard historical proof of this story, it is known that St. Dominic was a great champion of the Rosary and that the Rosary came into widespread use thanks to his efforts.

On October 7th 1571, a combined force of European nations triumphed over the Ottoman navy.  Because the odds were against the smaller European force, Pope Pius V had called for all of Europe to pray the Rosary in petition just before battle.  By all accounts, the Europeans shouldn't have won and, as a result, many considered their victory nothing short of miraculous.  This is why we honor Our Lady of the Rosary on October 7th to this day.

In 1917, at Fatima, the Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children on the thirteenth of the month for six months, beginning in May and ending in October.  During the July apparition, Mary urged the children to say the Holy Rosary daily in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary because only she could bring peace.

About the 54 Day Novena

In Italy in the late 1800s, a girl named Fortuna Agrelli had been suffering for almost a year with a very serious illness. The doctors had given up but the family relied on their fatih and began a series of Novenas. About two weeks later on 3 March 1884, the Blessed Mother appeared before Fortuna and told her to pray a series of three Rosary Novenas for healing.

The girl directed her prayers to Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, and was healed. In the apparitions that followed, Mary taught the girl the full 54 Day Rosary Novena.

Since that time many people have had their petitions granted after saying the 54 Day Rosary Novena.

My Rosary Pamphlet

I designed a trifold Rosary pamphlet for Rosary month and listed it in my Etsy printables shop.  The pamphlet includes all of the traditional Rosary prayers and has a complete list of the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous mysteries (listed under the days of the week they are to be recited).

How I'm Celebrating Rosary Month!

October 4, 2021

The 54 Day Rosary Novena

“Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today.” – St. Padre Pio
October is Rosary month.  And I'm celebrating by praying the 54 day Rosary Novena.  I'm going to be using the Hallow app, which is a Catholic prayer app (available in both a free and paid version) to guide me through the Novena.

The app is a good resource for me because it helps me stay on track and I like participating in the guided prayers.  But the same content is available via the Hallow website - and elsewhere.

A traditional Novena is only nine days long, so the 54 day Novena I'm doing is actually a series of six individual novenas.  Three novenas in petition (27 days) for a specific request and three novenas in thanksgiving - whether or not we perceive our petition as being granted (another 27 days).

The 54 Day Novena uses the the traditional Rosary mysteries, the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious.  So by doing one set of mysteries per day, you cycle through the entire Rosary three times for each of the six individual Novena's.

If this is confusing to you, I suggest checking out the Hallow website (below).

Why I Love the Rosary

“The Rosary is a remedy for all our evils and the root of all our blessings.” – Pope St. Leo XIII

I love the Rosary because it draws me closer to Jesus and Mary and because the Rosary gives me new insights into the events in the lives of Mary and Jesus (and the Gospel message as a whole).  An added benefit is that the Rosary centers me and gives me a degree of peace.

For me, the Rosary is also a wonderful spiritual warfare weapon.  Because of my past involvement in the New Age and occult, I've opened a lot of doors and there are times when spiritual warfare is a very real issue for me.

I do not rely upon the Rosary alone.  In addition, I go to Mass, receive the Holy Eucharist, make a regular confession, say specific Catholic prayers and have begun to read the Bible everyday with Fr. Mike Schmitz.

Still, the Rosary is a very key piece.  And this isn't just me saying so.  The effectiveness of the Rosary is well attested to by multiple saints, such as St. Padre Pio, Pope St. Leo XIII and, of course, St. Dominic, as evidenced in the quotes I've included in this post

I think that the Rosary is a wonderful way to petition God for a specific (large or small) requests.  Through the Rosary we can intercede for the Church, the world, our immediate area and the people we love the most.

I have been told that the 54 Day Rosary Novena is especially good in this regard.

The Way Things Sometimes Line Up

“The Rosary is a fortress against evil. It is a sign to Satan that you belong to Our Lady.” – St. Dominic

Modern life can be stressful and (like everyone) I have a lot going on.  While I'm fine during the day, I sometimes worry at night, more than I sleep, and there are times when I struggle with both my spiritual practice and my faith.

Fortunately, just as these things really began to weigh on me I was reminded of the importance of the Rosary by several seemingly unrelated events.

These events included:

  1. Watching the movie Fatima
  2. Gleaning a new perspective on Mary through Fr. Mike's Bible in a Year study
  3. Coming across the 54 Day Rosary Novena on Hallow
  4. Walking into church blind and seeing the special statue of Our Lady giving the Rosary to St. Dominic set up for the celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary (this Thursday)

It seemed to me that these events were all pointing toward the Rosary - and suggesting that I make an effort to develop a stronger devotion to Mary.  So I'm going to be doing that.

I will be writing more on the Blessed Mother and her Rosary in future posts!

The Waters of Noah

I wanted to share a passage from my favorite single chapter in the entire Bible. Isaiah 54.

While I know that this passage is really about Israel, it has always spoken straight to my heart. To me, it is a promise God makes to each of us.

A Butterfly in Flight

August 25, 2021

On Sunday I stopped at a convenience store so my son could use the ATM.  After he got his cash he stood looking down at something on the sidewalk while the other shoppers rushed around him, some obviously annoyed.

When the coast was clear he came back to the car and said that there was a butterfly on the ground that  seemed unable to fly.

Thinking that the butterfly was probably injured and that a convenience store sidewalk was a really awful place to die, I got out of the car to see what I could do.

The butterfly was big and beautiful and very yellow.  He didn't seem to be injured or at least if he was we couldn't see how. But he there was no doubt that he was not about to fly.  I watched him crawl around in circles for a moment, while the Sunday shoppers streamed back and forth, and then I put down my hand and let him crawl onto my palm.  His little feet were gentle and soft.

Walking around to the side of the store we were surprised to see that someone had made a small landscaped garden in the area between the shop and the lot.  So I put the butterfly down on a bush, even though he seemed as if he wanted to stay right there on my hand.

We drove the next few blocks to the 6th Street Flea Market wondering if the butterfly might have not been injured at all but simply new to life as a butterfly and not quite ready to take flight.  I told my son about a cocoon I had kept as a child and how the moth emerged and sat for a long time on the edge of the open jar as if he didn't quite know what to do.

I had thought the moth was sick so I gave him bits of broken leaves to eat and a soda cap of water and laid down on the grass and waited.  After what seemed like forever, he finally spread his wings and flew away, small and brown and sturdy against the bright blue summer sky.

Now, almost half a century later, my son and I couldn't help wondering if the big yellow butterfly might just have needed a bit of time to get his bearings.  It was a breezy day and probably not the best time for a first attempt at flying.  Or maybe he had been flying and got tossed about in the storm the night before.

Either way, we speculated, he might have remembered his old safe caterpillar life and decided to take a time out on the ground.

We arrived at our destination and got out of the car.  At that very moment, a bright yellow butterfly came dipping and weaving across the windy parking lot.  As he passed almost directly in front of us, I had the distinct impression that he was saying, "Look at me,  I've got it."

My son and I exchanged a look.  "I'd like to think that's our butterfly," he said.

"So would I," I said feeling surprisingly certain that it was.  And I felt happy for the butterfly and happy for us.

Appalachia, On Leaving (Poetry)

August 14, 2021

Appalachia, On Leaving

There's nothing for me here.

Only rain and streets of wet magnesium.

These hundred panes are filled with

watered down yellow light.

But the corners of the shop are webbed

with shadow.

There should be carriages and gas-lights here

but there is only a maroon and gold awning

out there across the street.

The tiny panes run with rain, blur the words,

whatever words

glisten up above that awning.

Plate glass windows and clothes behind.

Kresge's yellow-purple cotton housecoats,

old display cases, nineteen-forties styles,

and every looks so old.

My face, these shops, slip along grey-hound windows

lose their hold

and vanish.

Plans forgotten before the coffee's cold.

Promises I can't forget.

And you within your distance.

Tomorrow is waiting in a shipping crate,

one more highway, one more home.

I can't stop now.

So this time it's Miami, because there's no place left

I haven't been.

I take what was me in two-fisted filthy chunks

and wrench it out.

Catholic Bible in a Year Study: Getting Started! (Video)

July 22, 2021

The Catholic Bible in a Year Study

Recently I decided to take advantage of Fr. Mike Schmitz "Bible in a Year" Catholic Bible study.  And am so glad I did!  The study is perfect for me because it covers the entire Bible with an eye to the big picture of salvation history.

The study is available free on YouTube and on podcast.  It utilizes the Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition but you don't have to have a Bible because Fr. Mike reads the sections out loud in each video or podcast.

The Recommended Catholic Bible

If you do want to follow along like I do, you can use any RSV-CE Bible and get a free printable Bible in a Year reading plan  here.

Because I love books, I bought the Bible Fr. Mike is using: the Great Adventure Bible (affiliate link) AND the Bible in a Year Notebook (affiliate link). I'll be reviewing both in an upcoming post.  But I will say that I absolutely LOVE the Bible and am very happy with the notebook, as well.

The only other thing I want to not here is that the notebook does not lay flat.  I solved this problem by taking it to Staples and having it spiral bound for $4.50 and ended up with a beautiful little journal that I thought was well worth the price.  You can see it briefly in the video but I'll include some still images in my review post.

A Word About Timing

Although most people started this study when it began in January but I'm starting now and the timing is just right for me, as I talk about in the video.  But I mostly focus on the passages that really struck a chord with me in Week 1 of the study.

This will be my third time reading the Bible from cover to cover - but my very first time doing that as a Catholic!

One of the things that I'm especially thrilled about is how all of this fits in to my recent decision to focus more on my Marian devotions.

More on all of that in an upcoming post!

Winter in Miami (Poetry)

July 1, 2021

My Grandparent's Farm, Appalachian Mountains of NE Pennsylvania

"Winter in Miami"

My grandmother only goes to funerals.

She will never see Florida

but she has the world

in her windows.

In the morning the river is fog

and the trees are lost.

Sunrise happens way up high.

It spills down the slopes,

and shines brighter than itself

in the imperfections of old glass.

There is shade all day until

the sun gets lost in the hills again

and the light come on.

Forever is train noises and headlights

in the dark and every star in the universe

shining out across the fields.

I have been to Florida over and over

until I lost count.

Black seaweed, white sand,

the ocean is always itself.

The whole of humanity sits on towels

to watch it

stretch out of sight.

I wasn't ever there for that.

I was there for the dark days

and the rain.

Days when the wild things

cry out across the everglades

and the black-winged birds

come pouring in from the North

to wage war

upon the backlot dumpsters.

Days when the ocean churns its garbage out

onto cold beaches

and the tourists leave Miami

looking for other

better places

where the weather is constant

and the sea

stands still.

St. Gabriel, The Messenger

June 29, 2021

The Annunciation by Leonardo Da Vinci
And I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the U′lai, and it called, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened and fell upon my face. But he said to me, “Understand, O son of man, that the vision is for the time of the end.” - Daniel 8:16-17 RSV-CE

Today September 29 is the feast day of St. Gabriel the archangel.

The Hebrew word for angel "mal'akh" (מַלְאָךְ) means messenger as does the the Greek word "ángelos" (άγγελος).  So it makes sense that the Catholic Church has made St. Gabriel the patron of messengers, telecommunication workers and postal workers.

St. Gabriel first appears in the Hebrew bible as a translator of visions (Daniel 8:16-17 above). If the dream was a message, Gabriel's clarifies that message by interpreting the dream.

In the book of Enoch (which is not cannon but read by both the Church fathers and at least two of the disciples), Gabriel is an avenger - a role he also plays in Daniel as well. In the Talmud, it is Gabriel who delivers a message to Queen Vashti urging her to disobey her King - thereby paving the way for Esther and the preservation of the Jews.

Nowhere, however, is Gabriel's role as a messenger more important than when he addresses the Blessed mother in Luke 1:26-38:

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be.  And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High;
and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever;
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

And Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no husband?” And the angel said to her,

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you;
therefore the child to be born will be called holy,
the Son of God.

And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

-Luke 1:26-38 - Revised Standard Version - Catholic Edition
While I am not a telecommunications worker, I do think that blogging and a digital downloads shop falls somewhat under that heading, so I am planning to prayer to St. Gabriel for help with both of these ventures!

Reclaiming the Locus Years (Poetry)

June 10, 2021

Be glad, O children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given the early rain for our vindication; he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the latter rain, as before.  “The threshing floors shall be full of grain; the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.  I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten...   - Joel 2:23-25

Joel talks about the restoration of the land after four years of failed harvest. And harvest is a theme for me.

Reclaiming the Locust Years

We reap what we sow.

And pound for pound there is always more of what we harvest than of what we plant.

We sow good and get better. We forget to plant and get nothing.

Or we sow the wrong thing. The bitter thing. The thing we meant to bury.

A law of nature. Not good or bad. But always reliable.

The laws of the harvest are the laws of life. But the promise of the harvest is of God.

And his promise stands.

Seedtime and harvest, cold and heat.

So today I pray for that future harvest,

The one I believe in even when I can no longer remember plenty.

A Short Dream (Poetry)

May 2, 2021

Detroit, Michigan

About this Poem

I wrote the first version of this poem when I was 16 or 17 and, even though I rewrote several years later, it is still awkward.  In many ways, it is, and was, more symbolic than literal.  Because even though it is about the city of Detroit, out of all the cities I have lived in, I probably knew Detroit the least.

It is true that I was born there but we moved to the suburbs when I was two years old and then to Indiana when I was 13.  Meaning that, aside from the occasional event or shopping trip, I spent an entire decade in suburbia.  Things were not, of course, all good winds.  As I think can be read between the lines of the poem.

When I was old enough to drive, I went back and forth between Indiana and Michigan almost every weekend.  I spent some of my time there in the city but I spent most of it in a different suburb with different friends.

A few years later, after the birth of my son, I moved to the Northeast Appalachian Mountains near to where my maternal grandparents lived. And stayed there.

I never went back to Detroit.  And I never went back to Indiana either.

A Short Dream

Childhood was such a short dream.

Michigan, all good wind and apples

giving way early to Detroit,

The hard city nights chain linked

and dangerous.

Childhood was a dozen ponds,

soft with algae, reed encircled,

one big Rousseaux - with no explanations.

We trouped through the wind-breaker days,

the almost time for dinner evenings.

That's all.

Later there were barbeques

and cousins coming.

Sweet purple and white nights

of wet grass, wide lawns, air and space.

We spun beneath all the pale moons until

we fell drunk upon wet earth,

toadstools, violet skies and Venus.

The Church stood in its own

pale bright light.

Pastel coasts, dark communions

and a light which said

Eternal Life

But all that I've seen passes.

Moving through yellow lit tunnels,

dark houses huddling behind

the street lights.

A clear cold world of dark cars

and black glass,

A galaxy of light like China Town

at New Year's.

And in the end it was Detroit

that somehow captured me.

In spite of, because of

the rummage sale sidewalks

rain on the windows.

In the end

It was Detroit.

Empty shops, empty streets

and too much light

in too much darkness.

A Dream About Me?

March 26, 2021

Writing My Testimony

June 2022 update:  I have been waffling about writing my testimony for a long time.  Odds are, I was praying about it around the time I had this dream.  But I didn't see the connection until now.

The Dream

A contractor I apparently knew had told me about a volunteer opportunity.  He said that there was a woman living in a house that was in bad condition and that he, and some others, had been trying to help her.  So I went to see what I could do.

The house was unpleasant.  Not deplorable necessarily but ugly.  I was in the kitchen and the young woman I was supposed to help was complaining.  There were numerous problems with the property.  I remember that there was a 1980s style drop ceiling and some of the tiles were coming down.  Everything seemed flimsy and cheap.

I didn't enjoy talking to the woman.  She was loud and obviously immature.  She was younger than me. I didn't have a strong sense of her age but she acted like an adolescent or even a pre-adolescent.  I tried to be charitable but I found her very irritating.  It seemed that she was renting and she was very unhappy with her landlady who was neglecting the property.

A little while later, I was at a dinner being held in the woman's honor.  We were seated at a long table under an old aluminum carport next to the house.  I was at the far end of the table.  I had reconnected with an old friend.  In real life, our friendship ended years ago but I've regretted that.  In the dream, I was happy to reconnect with her and eager to catch up.  She looked young and successful, just as I remembered her.

Annoyingly, the guest of honor kept demanding my attention from her end of the table.  She had written several different documents and was insisting I read them aloud.  Someone brought them to me. It was a hodgepodge of old newspaper clippings and pictures and handwritten papers.

I did not want to be bothered with the woman or her requests and kept saying that I didn't want to read what she had written.  I was angry with her for interrupting and insisting I read.  I felt that she was demanding attention she didn't deserve even though the dinner was being held in her honor.

My Take

When I woke up, I was still a little annoyed.  But then it occurred to me that the immature, attention seeking woman might be that part of myself who I don't want to acknowledge - here in this blog or anywhere.  My feelings toward her are so negative that blogging about the dream is unpleasant.

But there is something about all of this that is demanding my attention.

I don't think it was any coincidence that I felt so much negativity toward the woman in the dream.  Other people apparently realized she needed help but, to me, she didn't deserve it.  I wanted to be left alone with my successful friend instead.

Whether the dream was a message from God or a message from my subconscious is debatable.  But I do feel that it's significant.

Looking at the Symbolism

I believe that God can talk to us through dreams but I do absolutely accept that most dreams are the product of our subconscious imagination.  Probably that's the most likely thing with this dream.  But still think that it's a dream that matters.  So I wanted to share some of the potentially symbolic meaning I found.
  • The charitable contractor > charitable carpenter > Divine influence?
  • Young woman > my inner self, my authentic self
  • House the young woman lived in > her self, her reality, my inner reality
  • Cheap, run down and flimsy state of the house > disregard for self, ignoring self, neglect
  • Woman mentioned as being part owner of house > my executive functioning self
  • My successful friend > what I aspire to but feel I can never be > feeling inferior, different
  • The dinner in honor of the young woman > the idea that others may care
  • My very irritated attitude toward the young woman > disliking and disregarding who I really am
  • Wanting the young woman to leave me alone > ignoring my problems
  • The material she wanted me to read > her story > my history
______________
June 2022 update: I also think this dream is about me writing my testimony.  I'm  realizing that while I want to write about spiritual warfare, demonic influence and the paranormal. I also want to talk about dreams.  In my own personal experience there is a lot of overlap in these areas.

Please note: I don't think that anyone should ever base any decision purely on a dream.  But I do think that dreams can tell us things about ourselves we might not realize otherwise.  Very occasionally, I think that our guardian angel or departed loved ones can reach out to us through dreams.  Unfortunately, the enemy can influence us through our dreams as well.  So it pays to be cautious!

The Annunciation by Le Sueur

March 22, 2021

Mary Saying Yes to God

Today is the Feast of the Annunciation.  It commemorates the announcement by the angel Gabriel to Our Blessed Mother, telling her that she would conceive a son through the Holy Spirit and the willing consent that led to the redemption of the world.

This an excellent day to go to Mass, to hear the consecration prayer read and perform the stations of the cross.  It is also a wonderful day to do your own personal consecration to Jesus through Mary.   Or to just plain say yes to God in whatever way works for you.

And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.

Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus. [32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end. And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man? And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren: Because no word shall be impossible with God. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
